Classroom Policies
Start and Dismissal Times: The first bell rings at 9:00 and the tardy bell rings at 9:10. Kindergarten students will dismiss at 3:20. (First through fifth grades dismiss at 3:30.)
Breakfast: We serve breakfast for free each morning. If you would like your child to eat breakfast before school, drop your child off by 8:50. Students eat their breakfast in the classroom and must be finished eating by 9:00 so we can begin our day.
Website and Friday/Homework Folders: I update the website, kknoblauch.weebly.com by the first day of each school week. Please make a habit of checking our website on Mondays. Each kindergarten student will have a maroon Friday Folder. One side of your child’s folder is labeled “Return to School.” Homework and papers such as permission slips, fund raisers, sign up forms, etc. will go on this side. Please look at and read the papers in the “Keep at home” side and really keep them at home.
Homework: Every day your child needs to listen to a story that you or a family member reads to him/her. As the year goes on, your child should also read to you. After each reading, please fill out the reading log. Students who meet the goal for the month will get a prize. On average, your child will have 2 additional math Home Connections per week. Please have your child return the homework folder each Friday morning.
Daily Communication: Each child will have a clear, plastic pocket for daily communication between home and school. Your child might also slip a book in there for their homework. You can send permission slips, lunch money, notes, etc. to me any day using this pocket.
Parent/Teacher Communication: If you need to speak with me, you have several options:
1. Write a note and pin it to your child’s shirt, hand it to him/her to carry into the classroom, or put it in the Daily Communication Pocket. (If you put a note in his/her backpack, chances are he/she will forget it is there, and I do not check the students’ backpacks.)
2. Call the classroom phone number, 720-747-2062. Before and after school the phone will ring into the classroom. During school hours it will ring directly to voice mail, please leave me a detailed message. I will get back to you as soon as I can. If you need to reach me during the day, or if there is an emergency, please call the front office at 720-747-2000 and the office will give me the message.
3. Make an appointment to meet before or after school. Once the bell rings at 8:50, my time and attention needs to be on the students. This is also the case when you pick up your child after school. I am not able to have a lengthy conversation. I need to focus on with whom the students are going home, and that they are safe. I’m happy to meet with you after all the students have been picked up.
4. Write me an e-mail. My address is [email protected]. I will write you back as soon as I can. This is a great way to contact me because I can check my e-mail in the evening.
Snack: Students will bring their own snack to school each day. I will also assign one student each week to bring in 2 boxes of graham crackers. If your child forgets to bring a snack, he/she will have a graham cracker. If your child has special dietary restrictions and cannot have graham crackers, please be in charge of sending a snack with your child.
Backpacks: Please send a backpack with your child every day. Make sure to write your child’s name on his/her backpack where strangers cannot read it. A great place is on the back by the straps. It is helpful to establish a routine of emptying your child’s backpack every day after school to see what your child has done, and also to read any information that might not have made it into the Homework Folders.
Birthdays: The class will sing “Happy Birthday” to your child. If you would like, you may send in cookies to be eaten at snack time, 1:40-1:55.
Allergies and Medical Concerns: PLEASE make sure that I am informed of any allergies or medical concerns you have for your child. If needed, talk to the school nurse if medication(s) is(are) required. It is important that you keep me up to date on all medical conditions your child has.
Lunch: Students may bring a lunch from home or buy a lunch from the cafeteria. Lunches are $2.90 and include milk. Milk only is $0.85. When your child needs lunch money, the cafeteria will put a stamp on his/her hand that says “Last Lunch.” When you send lunch money with your child, please put it in an envelope with your child’s first and last name, my name and your child’s lunch number in the front cover pocket of the homework folder. See sample.
Checking out Library Books: We will go to the library each week to check out books. Your child will be allowed to check out one library book each week. You may keep it for a week or less. Please make sure that the library book is returned the day before we go to library. Only children who return their library book from the previous week may check out a new book. Help your child enjoy the books respectfully and keep them safe from spills and little siblings to avoid fees for lost or damaged books. I’ll let you know which day we will check out books as soon as possible.
Shoes and Clothing: Please make sure your child wears appropriate clothing and shoes. NO FLIP-FLOPS OR HEELEYS (shoes with roller skates in the soles) or shoes with games in them. The children play every day. As it gets colder, they will still have recess. Make sure your child wears weather appropriate clothing: in summer, no spaghetti straps tops for the girls or sleeveless undershirts for the boys. Please send daughters wearing shorts under skirts/dresses and sons with pants that will stay on when they run. In winter, please make sure all coats, hats, gloves, mitten, scarves, etc. have your child’s name written on them.
Please pack an extra set of clothing in your child’s backpack in case of emergencies. Sometimes kindergarten students get so busy at school, or as they adjust to the new schedule, they have bathroom accidents. These extra clothes are also helpful if your child spills at lunch, goes down a wet slide or falls in the slush or snow.
Lost and Found: If your child loses an item, the lost and found is located by the cafeteria and by outside doors leading to the playgrounds. Sometimes students or teachers from other classes pick up the items and they are held in their classrooms or grade level areas, so it may take a while for the items to make their way to the lost and found. Please keep checking the lost and found for items until they are found. The best way to get lost items back is to write your child’s name on them before bringing them to school.
Arrival: Students will come into the school as soon as they arrive. Students eating breakfast should walk into the building at 8:50 all others by 8:55. Try to plan out how long it will take to get through the drop off loop (Kiss and Run) or to find parking and walk to the classroom. It is important for your child to be on time to school. If he/she is late, it will disrupt the class and your child’s routine. The first bell will toll at 9:00 and the tardy bell at 9:10. We have support teachers coming to our classrooms at 9:15. It will be very important for us to begin on time.
Dismissal: The dismissal bell for Kindergarten rings at 3:20 and for grades 1-5 at 3:30. If your child rides the bus or takes a daycare van, we will make sure he/she gets on the correct vehicle. Students going to Village East’s After Care program will be led to the cafeteria by an After Care employee.
Students whose parents or family members pick them up have two choices. You can drive through the Kiss and Run loop or you can park and walk to our dismissal doors. We will exit the building by the doors on the south side of our hallway. These doors take us to the grassy area in front of the school. Each child will give me a high five after his/her adult has made eye contact with me. Please do not take your child without giving me a high 5. I need to make sure all children are safe, and not running off.
I will follow the routine unless I hear from you in writing that your child has a change of plans or I get a phone call. Please be aware there is no time to check voice mail or e-mail after 1:40. Please avoid last minute changes. If you have an emergency, call the school’s main number 720-747-2000 and explain what is needed and the office will let me know right away. Changes in the routine are hard on everyone and are usually when mistakes happen.
If someone new, whom I have never met, comes to pick up your child, make sure you have informed me and the person is on your child’s list of people allowed to pick up on the computer. Please explain to the new person he/she must come and introduce himself to me. If I don’t get a notification from you, I will not let this person take your child home. They will have to go to the office and work it out with our principal or assistant principal.
If you are late to pick up your child, he/she will be waiting in the office. If you arrive after 3:45 your child will be looked after by the Village East after care program for a drop-in fee.
If you need to pick your child up early, you must go to the office and sign him/her out. The office will then inform me, and I will send your child to the office. Please avoid taking your child out early, it is very difficult to escort children to the office, and the school is very big. The children are just learning their way around and it is very disruptive to the class.
Attendance: If your child is ill, please call me and the attendance line. If you feel you only have time for one phone call, call me and I will forward your call to the attendance line just be sure to let me know you need me to. The attendance line phone number is 720-747-2007. Please let us know that your child is safe at home with you before we begin to worry.
School Supplies at Home: Your child will need pencils, crayons, scissors, glue and a pencil sharpener at home in order to complete homework.
Volunteers: I love, appreciate and need volunteers in the classroom. If you would like to volunteer, we can set up dates and times for you to do so. If you happen to have a day off and would love to stop by, please do so. I will also ask for volunteers for specific projects on our class website.
Thank you for your support! I am looking forward to a wonderful year together. If you have any questions or concerns, please call or e-mail me anytime. I look forward to meeting with you at Back-to-School Night, Thursday, August 18th. I am very excited to be a part of your family and to teach your child during this precious first year. It is an amazing journey and I always feel so fortunate to be a part of each child’s learning.
