Ways to Read ABC Books
1. Why this picture? (Look at the picture and think why did the author pick this picture for this letter. G is for "present" that doesn't make sense. What else can we call a present? "A gift.") 2. Add more words (Think of other words that start with that sound: garden, glass, grapes, gate...) 3. What comes next? (Use the ABC song to predict which letter will be next in the book. ABCDEFG H!) 4. Sing the book (Sing the ABC song as you point to the letters.) 5. What Letter? (Open the book to any page and quiz your partner on the letter name. If your partner doesn't know, tell him/her then keep going back to that page until it is easy.) 6. What sound? (Open the book to any page and quiz your partner on the letter sound. G has two sounds /g/ as in grass, and /j/ as in giraffe.) 7. What's different? (Using 2 similar ABC books look at the illustrations and compare what is the same and what is different. Both books have the letter G. This one has grass and glasses and a gift, and this one has giraffes. G can have 2 sounds.) |
